Safety Factor

A safety factor is the margin by which a structure's capacity must exceed its expected load.

A safety factor (or strength factor) is the required margin between a structure's capacity and the load it must carry under a given load case. Codes such as NESC and CSA specify safety factors for different components and conditions, and pole loading analysis applies them so results are conservative and defensible.
